Description
Polarised light micrograph of a water flea. Water fleas (order Cladocera) are small crustaceans that are filter feeders, ingesting algae, protozoa and organic matter. Surrounding the water flea are golden-brown algae colonies (Synura uvella, round), and Dinobryon sp. colonial flagellates (bottom right). Each cell of the golden-brown algae has two flagella (long hair-like structures) on the outer edge of the colony that are used for locomotion. Magnification: x160 when printed 10 centimetres tall.
