E. coli bacteria. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Escherichia coli bacteria in a rat's stomach. These rod-shaped bacteria (bacilli) are enterobacters, which are part of the normal content of human and animal digestive systems. However, under certain conditions they can cause gastroenteritis and urinary tract infections. Some strains also cause food poisoning. Magnification unknown.
