A slave coffle setting out from the business of J.W. Neal in Washington, D.C. in the 1830s. Neal was a dealer who bought large numbers of slaves in Virginia to sell in the expanding cotton plantations of the Southern interior. The 1000 mile transport was call the Second Middle Passage.
