Description
The Madonna weeps and mourns as she holds her son Jesus Christ across her lap after His crucifixion.
Since the days when Michelangelo completed the Pieta, many believe he purposely composed Mary's outstretched left hand to beckon us to share with her, the profound grief caused by the death of her son.
"Accepting Fate" is not Michelangelo's own "M Pieta," but it is a stunning replica welcoming those who visit this village cemetery in the mountains of Calabria, Italy. I don't know exactly how old it is but when I asked a local elderly gentleman who was walking around inside the cemetery, he mumbled something to the effect of "hundreds" of years old.
The original Pieta by Michelangelo was an interpretation of Mary holding a dead Christ in her arms is a devotion to the Renaissance Humanist ideals of physical perfection and beauty. Michelangelo, being bold, celebrated the intimacy and majesty of that frozen moment in time, choosing to show Mary as a chaste and glowing young woman holding the gracefully lifeless body of the Savior across her lap.
