Acetylene lamp, 19th Century artwork. This lamp burns the gas acetylene, which is produced in the lamp by dripping water on to calcium carbide. Controlling the amount of water coming into contact with the calcium carbide controls the amount og gas produced and therefore the size of the flame. Image from 'La Science Illustree' Louis Figuier (1895).
