Adelie Penguin With Chick
Photograph - Photograph
Adelie penguin (Pygoscelis adeliae) on its pebble nest with a two-day-old chick. Adelie penguins normally raise two chicks. The male and female take turns to incubate the eggs and feed the young. While incubating they may fast for over 20 days. Adelie penguins are highly social birds and live in large colonies, which can contain tens of thousands of nests. They have elaborate territorial and courtship rituals. They dive in shallow coastal waters to feed on krill and small fish. They are found around the Antarctic coast and nearby islands. Photographed on Signy Island, South Orkney Islands.
