The County closed its public schools for five years (1959-64) to evade court ordered integration. In 1963, a federally supported Prince Edward County Free School System opened four schools, including Mary E. Branch Elementary School. In 1964 the US Supreme Court ruled in Griffin v. County School Board of Prince Edward, ordered the schools be reopened.
