African American Gathering The Dead
Photograph - Photograph
African American gathering the dead and wounded the morning after the Colfax massacre, the culmination of an election dispute in Louisiana, 1873 that lead to the death of 3 Whites and 150 African Americans, most of whom were murdered while unarmed. Prosecutions advanced to the US Supreme Court, which ruled Fourteenth Amendment protections did not apply to the actions of individuals, but only to the actions of state governments, effectively ending Federal protection of Freedmen.
