Air Pollution Over China
NASA / Science Source
Photograph - Photograph
Air pollution over China. Layer of haze trapped over east-central China, near the coast of Bo-Hai (right). The poor air quality is due to increased vehicle pollution, coal-fired power stations, and home heating and cooking fires. Meterological influences in the area create temperature inversions; air at the surface of the Earth is cooler than air in the atmosphere. The cooler air rises, trapping the haze near the Earth's surface until the temperature changes.
