Algae In Soil, Sem
Dr Jeremy Burgess
Photograph - Photograph
Algae in soil. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of peat in a flower pot showing the surface layer microworld. To the eye this layer is the green slime, which appears when light and moisture conditions are high. When examined under the microscope it consists predominantly of single celled and clumped green algae (blue, round). Also present are rectangular box-shaped diatoms, which are another algal form. A nematode worm (red, centre) is also seen. The underlying peat is not seen.
