Description
Alluvial fan, Kazakhstan. Satellite image of agricultural fields in an alluvial fan (upper left) near Lake Alakol (right) near Almaty, Kazakhstan. North is at top. An alluvial fan is formed by deposits of silt as a river emerges onto flatter land from mountains. This alluvial fan has formed from the Tente River as it flows down from the foothills (bottom) of the Dzungarian Alatau mountains. The alluvial fan is about 30 kilometres across at its widest point. Four towns are seen on the northern edge of the alluvial fan. Image data obtained on 9 September 2013 by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on the Landsat 8 satellite.
