Ambroise Pare In The Army, Artwork
Photograph - Photograph
Ambroise Pare serving in the army. Historical artwork showing the French surgeon Ambroise Pare (1510-1590, centre right), amputating an injured soldier's leg. Pare is considered one of the pioneers of surgical techniques. He gained much experience as a military surgeon on the battlefields of Italy. He introduced the use of turpentine, instead of boiling oil, to cauterise wounds, and also pioneered ligature, tying arteries to stop bleeding after amputation.
