The hieroglyphic script was designed to be carved into stone, with hieratic and demotic scripts used in papyri and manuscripts. Published in the six-volume 'Manners and Customs of the Ancient Egyptians' (1837-41) by British egyptologist John Gardner Wilkinson (1797-1875).
