Description
Jito Tenmu, otherwise known as the Imperial Mausoleum of Emperor Tenmu and Empress Jitou. It is located in the Asuka area of Nara Prefecture, Japan. As the name suggests, buried here are Emperor Tenmu (sometimes spelled Temmu) (d. 686) and his wife, Empress Jito (sometimes spelled Jitou) (d. 702). Empress Jitou is said to be the first Japanese ruler to be cremated. To this day, the site remains part of the Imperial Estate, and strict rules govern access.
