And The Angel Of Hashem Smote In The Camp Of Ashshur
David Baruch Wolk
Painting - Oil On Canvas
And (the angel of Hashem) smote in the camp of Ashshur
(M'lachim II, 19:35)
Sankheriv the King of Ashshur with an army of one hundred and eighty five thousand troops come upon Yerushalyim to destroy it. Ranking officers of his army speak disparagingly of Hashem, G-d of Yisrael. Khizkhiyahu the king requests of Hashem: I will sleep on my bed and You fight the war. And thus it was; Hashem sent an angel and wiped out all of them in one moment.
There is a place one can reach in avodat Hashem where, after all his years of labor for true holy success, that he sees, that before him stands opposition so enormous that, even were he to mount all his strength, it wouldn't be enough; in any case he needs a miracle, he needs that Hashem will intervene in a special way, in order that the could possibly succeed. Sizing up the situation he concludes: “it is all You, Hashem, in any case; I have no strength to fight any more. I am going to sleep. You, please, finish it all off.”
