I treated this particular image to a lot of photoshop edits and yes, there was some digital hand-painting involved, but I think what you're seeing and asking about is actually the product of one of the textures I used. Hope that's helpful.

I drive by this beautiful horse-farm every so often and get a few new snaps. This particular one was taken July 15, 2012, Montgomery County, Maryland, with the Nikon D300 and the 18-200mm vr Nikon lens, shutter 1/1250, aperture f/8. Much tinkering in many programs including Photoshop CS4, Photomatix, Capture NX2 and Adobe Bridge. My thanks to Leslie Nicole for the lovely texture.
