Mixed Media - Pastel/mixed-media On Paper
This Art Heart was painted for a little girl named Angel. During pregnancy, Angel's parents realized she had a congenital heart defect (Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome). Though the doctor recommended they terminate the pregnancy, Angel's parents decided to have the baby no matter what the outcome. After changing doctors, Angel was born, and she had her first open heart surgery at five days old. Following her recovery, Angel brought joy to her parents for thirteen months before she passed away at her home.
Children who do not survive congenital heart defect are referred to as "angel children" in the CHD community. For this reason, I paint white wings for each child who has passed. The colors of dawn are in contrast to another Art Heart I created, "Olivia", who passed at thirteen days. Angel lived exactly thirteen months, and so I added a golden ray around the sun for each month of her life.
