I love reading about, looking at, talking about and admiring VERY old Venetian Wedding Cake beads such as the ones in this necklace. I also enjoy adorning the glorious old beads with vintage, exotic crystals and hand-knotted gorgeous silk! It takes a lot of time, effort and patience but the end results are spectacular!
This necklace turned out to be one of my favorite pieces! I wanted to try something a bit different with my beloved antique Venetian wedding cake beads. The four focal beads in this piece were taken from a very old necklace I purchased that needed some TLC.
The Wedding Cake beads in this necklace are quite old, as they were likely made sometime in the 1900's-1920's. After stringing the first 6 beads into a traditional Venetian necklace, I tried to design these beads into a piece that would look very Old-World Italian...and I think this necklace hits the mark!
Each bead in this piece is an incredible emerald green glass bead with the slightest hint of yellow. Yes...these beads are not a TRUE emerald and definitely not a blue-ish green, either (say, like a teal or aqua). The seller told me that the bead color was VERY rare for its time! In keeping with the tradition of crafting the Wedding Cake bead, these beads have several layers of colored glass in pink, fuchsia, yellow, blue and white in the traditional "forget-me-not" flower pattern. Of course, the forget-me-nots are over bands of Aventurina but there are also swirls of Aventurina over the forget-me-nots...really pretty and sweet...very unique.
I have purchased a LOT of antique Venetian wedding cake beads and the beads in this piece are REALLY spectacular!
Each of the five Wedding Cake beads measure approximately 15 mm round. I purchased these glorious beads from a collector of antique Venetian beads who was parting with a portion of her inventory.
The crystals in this necklace are also something else! They are quite old, German "pressed" Montana bead crystals that are textured and iridescent! These crystal beads were likely made in the 1940's and measure 7 mm x 10 mm. I purchased these beads from an antique crystal bead dealer, as I intended to craft them into a different piece of jewelry. When I saw them, they just looked at home with the glorious Emerald Wedding Cake beads...so here they are, the two very different bead types, side-by-side!
I also framed one of the Venetian focal beads with several 8 mm, Swarovski, light rose, bicone crystals & three replica brass stampings.
I primarily work with sterling silver and 14K gold; however, I designed this necklace with antique-styled, authentic brass "stampings," which were copied from museum pieces from the late 1800's! The brass chain in this piece is also of the highest quality, as are the wire that is wound through each bead and the 15 mm fish-hook type clasp!
The main necklace portion of this piece falls at 18" and the dangling Venetian focal bead brings the total length of the piece to approximately 20".
This necklace is very special!
