Collecting VERY antique beads such as the ones in this necklace, adding old, exotic crystals and hand-knotting gorgeous silk thread are all reasons that I fell in love with Venetian beads and traditional Venetian bead work in the first place!
This fabulous necklace is probably my favorite piece. The Wedding Cake beads in this necklace are quite old, as they were likely made sometime from 1890-1910. Each bead is an ivory white glass with a yellowish-gold hue, spun individually on a mandrel and layered with bits of red, blue, white and pink molten glass. The colored glass additions form that traditional Venetian Wedding Cake bead "forget-me-not" flower pattern over beautiful swirls and bands of Aventurina (copper infused glass).
Each of the six Wedding Cake beads measure approximately 15 mm round. I purchased these glorious beads from a collector of antique Venetian beads who was parting with some of his inventory.
The crystals in this necklace are amazing! They are quite old, German Barrel Cathedral crystals called "Coral Givre" that were made sometime in the 1940's. These crystals are hard to describe because they are clear with bright red glass infused throughout. Keeping with European traditional in the 1940's, the crystals are "capped" with grey glass...very UNUSUAL, quite UNIQUE! I adorned the German crystals with 8 mm, vintage, round, multi-faceted, dark topaz crystals.
Many of the beads in this necklace are embellished with Vermeil 24K traditional Florentine-style bead caps.
I lovingly hand knotted each and every bead in this necklace, in traditional Venetian fashion. The necklace has 3 mm Vermeil Heishi beads spaced throughout. The gold silk thread that holds the necklace together is the highest quality Gudebrod FFF silk thread. This necklace is positively spectacular!
Finally, because the necklace is 100% hand-knotted it does not have a clasp. Measuring approximately 18" in length, this necklace easily slips over the head!
