Czech artist Alfonse Mucha (1860 - 1939), whose works entered the public domain in 2010, is said to have been discovered in 1895 by actress Sarah Bernhardt, who commissioned him to do a number of paintings of her stage characters, including the very famous Gismonda. She signed a six-year contract with Mucha and soon he was one of the most in demand commercial artists in Paris. He did posters and decorative panels, book and magazine covers, advertisements, theater programs, menu cards, calendars and postcards. He designed jewelry, theater sets and store interiors. I have always admired what his extraordinary talent created, and now that his works are in the public domain I decided to present a few of them in collage form.
