Description
Astrantia is a genus of herbaceous plants in the family Apiaceae, endemic to Central, Eastern and Southern Europe and the Caucasus. The Genus name comes from the Greek word for star in reference to the star-like quality of the flower heads. Masterwort produces many small, ivory flowers that are flushed pink and bloom continuously throughout the summer and fall. The flowering period extends from June through September. Astrantia major is an entomophilous plant, mainly pollinated by beetles, but also by other insects. This perennial plant reproduces itself also by means of buds present at the ground level.
