he Channel Gardens separates La Maison Francaise (610 Fifth Avenue) from the British Empire Building (620 Fifth Avenue), just as the English Channel separates the two countries in whose honor the buildings were named. It provides a calm diversion from the bustle of Fifth Avenue for generations of New Yorkers. The designers intentionally built a slope into the sidewalk, knowing that this would help draw passersby toward the gardens, shops, and other buildings in the Center.
