The Atlanta Flatiron was one of my long-time subjects during my years of Atlanta, pretty much from the beginning of my interest in photography. I had run across photos of the much more famous Flatiron building in New York City, but it would be years later before I would see that one in person. It was while seeking information about the NYC Flatiron that I learned there are other buildings built on the same basic plan around the country. And then I learned there was one right in my area.
This particular image is from my last stroll in downtown Atlanta before leaving, but it's one of many I took of what I think is an overlooked landmark of the city. Atlanta's Flatiron although shorter is actually older than its famous cousin up north.
Built in 1897, the Atlanta Flatiron on Peachtree Street is Atlanta's oldest surviving skyscraper. By today's standards, it may not seem so tall, but for a period of its history it was one of the taller buildings in the city!
