Description
Axis vertebra (C2), artwork. This is the second vertebra in the spine, articulating with the atlas (C1) above. Together these vertebrae allow the head to be nodded and rotated. This is the vertebra's upper (superior) surface. The frontal (anterior) surface is at top, and the rear (posterior) surface at bottom. The pads of the intervertebral disc (grey) are either side of the odontoid process (dens), a structure unique to this vertebra. The prominent spinous process is at lower centre. This vertebra has very small transverse and articular processes (left and right). The spinal cord passes through the central gap (the vertebral foramen).
