the twin .50s in the nose turret (which was a converted rear turret) gave the J model a big improvement over early model B-24s as the Germans were using head on attacks. The former bombadier w/ norden bomb sight gave way to toggeler gunner. He simply salvoed the bombs when lead ship did or when they were attacked over the target. The high aspect ratio Davis wing profile made formation flying a really difficult thing as was slow flight. The engines were first rate. the bad fit of the improvised nose turret made the aircraft very drafty. We built over 14,000 of them in WW2. The Navy had a b-24 (PB4Y) which served well as a long range patrol bomber.
