Description
The first time I ever got this close to a bumble bee, I was just a toddler. Funny enough, it's one of my oldest memories. I probably wouldn't remember it at all if that bumble bee hadn't stung me. I learnt a painful lesson though, that it is not a good idea to try to swat a bee with a coal shovel! Many years have passed since that day and I'm a lot older and wiser. Being a keen gardener, I absolutely appreciate the very important job that bees do. I am no longer scared to get this close to a bee and it fascinates me to watch them at work in my garden. I caught this one, having it's breakfast on a sunflower. Sunflowers are a great place to find and photograph bees. Not only do the gorgeous yellow petals provide a wonderful background and compliment the colour of the bee, but the centre of sunflower head is made up of hundreds of individual flowers, which keeps the bee occupied for quite a while before it needs to move on.
