( Copyright Mel Steinhauer all rights reserved ) While traveling through California's beautiful Napa Valley, I found something I was not looking for. About three miles north of St. Helena on Highway 29, I saw a sign pointing to a small historic park that I just could not resist. This beautiful old grist mill built by Dr. Edward Turner Bale, has been here since 1846. Area farmers brought their grain here to be ground on the mill stone. The huge 36 foot wheel was turned by waters diverted from the nearby Mill Creek. Although Bale died in 1849, the mill was used into the early 1900s. Today, visitors to this beautiful historic park can watch milling demonstrations, take historic tours or simply enjoy the nostalgia of days gone by. I did just that when I accidentally discovered the old ... Bale Grist Mill.
