Ballade For Eminescu
Painting - Acrylic On Canvas
Ballade for Eminescu is a homage to our national poet Mihai Eminescu the most famous and influential Romanian romantic poet. In his poems he frequently used metaphysical mythological and historical subjects and his work was influenced by the German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer. His poems and philosophy have had a profound effect on my paintings and also in my life. His portrait found in the centre of the painting refers to the concept of "the evening star" a name attributed to Eminescu by Romanians for his geniality and unicity.
The "Evening star" is a ninety eight stanzas long poem about the impossible love between the immortal Hyperion and a beatiful mortal princess. In the story a young princess prayed to the evening star each night. The Evening star falls in love with her and is willing to give up his immortality but realises that the pure love he has for the young girl cannot be sustained in the mortal world.
The romantic poem is based on the concept of the destiny of the genius who lives in a limited and mean world incapable of understanding him and hostile toward the poet.
Eminescu refers to the concept of ideal love which he chased with an immense thirst all his life. Most of his works have been inspired and are about emphasising the communion of mankind with nature, this is represented by the forest's trees playing on violins a ballade in his memory.
