Description
Bast, Baset, Bastet
An ancient Egyptian goddess originating in the Nile Delta, circa 930 BC. Her power and persona was so acknowledged and beloved by the ancient Egyptians, that a city, Bubastis, was named in honor of her. Bubastis, a central trade center and location of her temple was situated in a harbor formed in the shape of the crescent moon. Bast was the goddess most assessable to all peoples, nobles, clergy and the simpleton alike. Bast is usually portrayed as a woman with a domestic cathead holding a sistrum, loaves of bread, perfume bottles, and accompanied by kittens. Her presence is of a very feminine nature as is the feline creature. Her power and essence is the divine femininity of woman and the goddess manifest in the mundane world. Bast represents the delightful feminine qualities that depicts the finer influences Egypt had on the world: including cosmetics, perfume, oils, fine art, jewelry and dress.
