The sun sure sets early in the northern winter! I landed in Hartford CT at noon, rented a car and drove out to Jamestown (across the bay from Newport RI), arriving barely in time for a gorgeous sunset! Beavertail Light is located on the southernmost tip of Conanicut Island, which separates the East and West Passages of Narragansett Bay. The lighthouse is located on a rocky windswept point that looks south to the open Atlantic Ocean. Beavertail Lighthouse is the third-oldest lighthouse in North America. This site has hosted beacons and lighthouses since at least 1705. The current lighthouse dates from 1856 and is still an active USGS aid to navigation. On another day, I made it out here to see the beautiful sunrise and rock formations lying below the lighthouse structure. The site is located in a park and is freely accessible for viewing, although the tower itself is not open.
