Becoming My Self
Beverley Harper Tinsley
Painting - Watercolor, Ink And Graphite
Becoming My Self was inspired by the following poem:
My hair is spiky as a porcupine
My ears are as pointy as an elf’s
My body is as strong as a wrestler
I am tall like a giant
My arms are as strong as a big gorilla
My neck is as long as a giraffe’s
My eyes are as small as Pluto
By: Christopher C., Age 9
A vibrant and colorful painting of a giraffe, gorilla, and strange looking amalgamation of a number of characters in the above poem. This whimsical, playful piece was created specifically to benefit the America Scores program. Although the final watercolor became a seemingly spontaneous, wild and bright tribute to childish imagination, it required a great deal of careful thought and planning to achieve, and I am grateful to the poet for providing me with this opportunity for reflection and artistic growth.
The original is based on a poem written by a talented 9 year old, and was donated to Inspired Art Denver, for an auction benefiting America Scores.denver/http://inspiredartdenver.wordpress.com/art/
The Inspired Art project takes poems written by Denver elementary students and asks local artists to create original works inspired by their words. All submitted and accepted pieces were featured for auction at Inspired Art on Thursday, April 11, 2013 with proceeds going to support America SCORES Denver. This project offers a unique way to display the power of poetry by Denver students, and brings to life creativity and imagination of their words through others' art.
America SCORES Denver is a unique, comprehensive, youth development program which uses the tools of soccer, writing, creative expression, and service learning to empower urban youth. With teamwork as the unifying value, America SCORES Denver inspires youth to lead healthy lifestyles, be engaged students, and become agents of change in their community. Currently our program is in place in nine elementary schools in west Denver serving nearly 300 students.
