Description:
This painting is a continuation of my style/technique that I call "Abstract-Surrealism"
This painting was very experimental in regards to color, light and texture and was in a way an extension and continuation of experimental patterns used in my past few paintings regarding the semi-impressionistic textures, light and color and kinda grew to be more like this over time. I mainly did this to test out color/ light/ texture for my brand of surrealism to see where it would take me. Overall I am very happy with this experimentation and have learned alot from it and plan on using this technique again in future works.
The underlying concept of this painting is also a continuation of patterns idealistically as I have added in my "ape" figure again which i have been doing for a while now as well as adding in video cameras, which is becoming a growing "motif" of mine. Both heavily inspired by the movie "The Truman Show" and its concept of a man living in a falsely built world while it is being broadcasted to the entire world.
The concept of this painting is to show the ape [representative of humanity in general as what they are essentially, apes/animals living in a world of uncertainty] peering out into the sky in the early morning with a telescope out of curiousity and a yearning to understand whats going on in the world he lives in. The ape is looking out at another ape-man on a lowered platform hanging from the sky with cleaning/ maintenance equipment that is down to do mintenance work on the "set", the "false reality" in which the peering ape lives in, much like the truman show set. This was meant to be done while the ape was sleeping, but he snuck out in an attempt to feed his suspicions about his world and its validity. The "maintenance crew" is staring back at him catching them off guard.
This is a set, everything is manufactured, everything needs maintained, regulated and watched over.
In this painting you can see the house in which this ape stays, as well as hidden cameras watching this morning scene from different angles, one obvious, one semi-hidden. Also able to be seen are a paint can with a paintbrush on top of it as well as a television with the words "LIVE" in red while showing a galaxy as a live broadcast. You can also see an "Exit" doorway off in the distance on the horizon.
1.The paint can/ brush- This was partially placed in for aesthetic/ texture of the canvas reasons but was also placed in as mis-placed maintenance equipment by the crew at work.
2.The television broadcast- outside of this false world/ tv. set, lies the universe.
I feel that the aesthetics go hand-in-hand with the idea of this painting in many ways. An instant example-
The clouds in the sky [along with their reflections in the ocean below] look kinda like meteors due to the almost indistinguishable horizon line and the abstract nature of these things. This goes well with the idea of the underlying space theme to the painting both in the sense that the ape is looking through a telescope as well as the live television broadcast of the galaxy.
In the end, man is essentially an ape/ animal that lives in a confusing world of uncertainty.
Thus the reason I represent man as an ape trapped in a false world in which the universe is on the otherside, constantly being sought after.
