Description
Bernadette at the Battle of the Bogside, part of the peoples gallery murals in Rossville Street of the bogside area of Derry Londonderry Northern Ireland. The murals painted by the Bogside Artists are an ongoing project since 1994 due to be completed in 2008. The murals depict key moments in the Northern Ireland troubles from a Derry perspective. The Bogside Artists are William Kelly, Tom Kelly and Kevin Hasson.
The mural was painted in 1996 and depicts Bernadette McAliskey (nee Devlin) addressing crowds in the Bogside. She recieved a prison sentence for taking part in and inciting a riot. She was the youngest woman ever elected to the British Parliament making her maiden speech on her 22nd birthday.
