Bruce Combs - REACH BEYOND

Bruce Combs - REACH BEYOND

This fascinating painting by Natalie Holland is excellent as usual. It features two, heads and bodies over- andor under- lapping. Therefore I was expecting to see three nipples, all in a row, as in her fairly recent painting, DOUBLE DELIGHT. I could be wrong, but I can make out only two possibilities here. Meanwhile, the accompanying quotation fits perfectly with a bit of humor emphasizing most of the physical aspects suggested by the title and this lovely painting itself! As most people probably notice and are aware of, that practice is nearly a Holland trademark. This unique technique is emphatically employed in the wonderful book EXOTIC DREAMS: Painter Natalie Holland and Poet Thao Chuong.

As most people probably notice and are aware of, that practice is nearly a Holland trademark. This unique technique is emphatically employed in the wonderful book EXOTIC DREAMS: Painter Natalie Holland and Poet Thao Chuong. There, paintings by Ms Holland feature some too often familiar aspect experienced during the process of creating or maintaining love. These paintings are followed by a related or appropriate poem on the facing page. The effect often becomes impressive and fuller than either painting or poem would be alone. (Continued)

Bruce Combs - REACH BEYOND 22 Minutes AgoWilliamsburg, VA - United StatesCONTINUED FROM ABOVE! Returning to BEST FRIENDS FOREVER, what a nice explosion of quite similar hair, contrasting with absolutely beautiful imaginative AND thoughtful shapes and colors below that feature here. (And I see now that there may be found three nipples between or shared by the two ladies.) And the two faces are definitely left and right brained, obviously displaying much and serious attention by the creating artist! (Or could they be mistaken as Siamese Twins? Or perhaps really be so? They still could be friends, at best times -- maybe closer (as the figurative expression goes) but apart (as the closest) of friendships sometimes are. Also only so far as their physical limitations allow)! And pondering that, we realize that the title is a perfect example of how a title may direct a viewer attention and limit other interpretations and even their perception of and, musing on, details.) On the positive side, a title can also suggest an aspect or direction that many readers might overlook I think that there is only one, perhaps, breast shared by the ladies. It would be extremely (impossibly) high on the lady whose head is behind (for us viewers) but whose body otherwise fills most of the front and our right, according to the lines as I see them, although it is placed and colored more as the lady behind on our left, but remains still very high for her, too. It sports one Hollandish-perhaps sort of nipple, though still very high -- much higher on the breast than Ms Holland usually places them, not merely outlines, again as her usual. Far beyond these and the marvellously pleasant thought out and executed lesser details, which create and support the concept of the whole. Continued
