Description
This is an image of a male pine grosbeak taken in the backyard. The grosbeaks have been gone for a few days. The males seem to leave first. Grosbeaks are quite large finches, in fact, supposedly the largest ones. They usually come down here in northern Minnesota most winters. They have mostly left by the second week of March. The love sunflower seeds. Their large, powerful beaks can shred the outer cover of a seed in short order! Plus, a large group can consume prodigious quantities of seeds very quickly.
