The inimitable Billie Holiday is the subject of this portrait. In the days of big band and early jazz, there was no greater talent, no better voice, than that of Lady Day. Her troubled life lent a sadness and weight to her art, and the recordings she left behind are timeless. This portrait was a commissioned piece, but the subject was chosen by me. As an artist, there may be no greater joy than having the opportunity to paint such a legendary and majestic figure. I hope you enjoy this piece as much as I enjoyed creating it.
