Painting - Oil Paint On Pine
The Black Schimmel is influenced by works by Wilhelm Schimmel who lived from 1817-1890.
William Schimmel was a German-born wood carver who tramped through the Cumberland Valley near Carlisle, Pennsylvania, often staying in jails and almshouses. His only occupation was carving heads of animals out of soft pine, which he would sell for a few pennies each. Reportedly he had a very surly disposition.
He used just a pocket knife to carve and random paints that he would find in the garage.
For my Black Schimmel I used layers of oil paints to work in harmony with each other.
The first coat is rich red and the top coat is black. I blend the two in the piece. The Schimmel is woodcarved using traditional woodcarving tools and I used pine.
This piece will be great for your collection and can be passed down from generation to generation.
