Sensational work of art while telling a terrifying tale. This blows me away...so powerful. Instant v/f.
Arjun L Sen replied:
Thanks, Lenore. I deliberately putbskme surviving vegetation into the foreground against the destroyed, dusty background, to highlight the destruction that men might do.

Arjun, I am returning to view this again for two reasons. First of all this is a beautiful image. The other reason is that I wanted to read your in-depth replies to comments. Your historical, geographical and scientific knowledge, along with your deep and meaningful thoughts combine for fascinating and mindful reading. I appreciate your seriousness about these global matters. Thank you for supporting my work on FAA. I enjoy corresponding. I hope all is well with you and Jane. Have already faved and voted on this but would do that again if possible. aew

Wow Arjun such a great piece!!! It is definitely a world wide concern and you are right that there are those that use greed and power as a justification for horrendous death tolls. America is far from these "hot spots" but we definitely have "crack pots" of our own, primarily using religion (as well) as an excuse to discriminate and hate and as a means to gain more power. A few of these crackpots have publically suggested our US military should "take out" those not just like them..troubling indeed.....sometimes I think "civilization" is on a backwards journey..........but I hope not!!... v/f!!
Arjun L Sen replied:
Thanks for your vote of confidence, Anne! I guess every country has its crackpots and they'll latch on to any religion, belief system or idea and turn what is good in it into something bad. I was watching a remarkable movie called 'The Kite Runner' based on the novel by Khaled Hosseini and set in Afghanistan. It starts in thr seventies and shows what the communists were doing wasbad and it moves to the ninrties and shows the Taliban doing worse. Crazy people inevitably twist something good into something bad. Let's hope they don't take over.

Me too! Let's hope it doesn't come to that. But history isn't encouraging. Every weapon ever invented has been used repeatedly. While world nuclear war is probably unlikely, local nuclear wars or a war is more likely because there is no evidence that leaders and politicians are committed to peace. Humans seem generally accepting of "collateral damage" and while educated people aren't likely to entirely forget what happened to Hiroshima and Nagasaki or even, in a civilian context. Chernobyl, there are these "emerging market" countries that have a very different social profile from the traditional nuclear weapons countries. For one thing, although they have advanced technologies, they are still mainly peasant societies with relatively little exposure to historical education and even less to the experience of "total war" as it was experienced in the West. Also, these societies accept "collateral damage" much more readily than Westerners do. For instance, Iran lost close to a million men in the 10-year war with Iraq (1979-89). They don't seem to have a huge collective anguish over it such as happened in Europe with the Great War (1914-18). India and Pakistan lost a million killed in 1946-48 when they separated, but they're still prepared to fight wars over their issues. In 1999 they fought yet another border war in Kashmir and threatened nuclear strikes. Although this was mainly just talk, and in fact militarily the use of nuclear weapons remains last resort on both sides, it could happen. The main problem is that inside these countries are rabble-rousing extremist politicians who wouldn't mind a nuclear war if it brought them power. In a country of 1.1 billion (India) or even 180 million (Pakistan) a million or two people and a devastated and permanently radioactive dead zone of several thousand square kilometres may seem acceptable collateral damages to these nutcases and the ignorant rabble who support them. Religious bigotry has a lot to do with these quarrels. There could be nothing less spiritual than these people prepared to kill other people in the name of "religion" but they are a pretty prominent part of life worldwide today, aren't they? At least in the US you are reasonably far away from this crap. The Twin Towers showed that the madness could come right into the heart of America but in the final analysis it was a stunt - a very deadly stunt, true, but a stunt. It can't wipe out America.
