Description
Bone tool, Cueva Mayor. This carved bone tool was used to make holes, in skins for example. Cueva Mayor was first discovered in 1910 and is believed to contain evidence of the final phase of human evolution, between 127,000 and 11,000 years ago. However, more recent human occupation in this cave dating back 3,800 years means that it will take time to excavate through the Early Bronze Age levels to the Upper Pleistocene levels. Cueva Mayor is one of several sites in Sierra de Atapuerca, Spain, that have been studied on and off over the past century, leading to a massive advancement in the understanding of human evolution. In 2000, Sierra de Atapuerca was made a world heritage site by UNESCO.
