EDITORIAL USE ONLY. Brattain and Bardeen. Portrait of the US physicists Walter Houser Brattain (1902-1987, left) and John Bardeen (1908-1991) whilst playing golf together. These two men are best known for inventing the transistor along with William Shockley, and they shared the 1956 Nobel Prize in Physics for their invention. Transistors are solid state switches found in nearly every electronic component today.
