Brown trout (Salmo trutta fario) swimming between water weeds in a pond. The brown trout is native to Europe and Asia but has been introduced elsewhere, particularly in North America, for sport fishing. Because of its importance for food and game, historically populations have often been artificially boosted. It is likely that few natural populations still exist. It can grow to weigh as much as 20 kilograms, but in smaller ponds mature specimens weigh as little as 1 kilogram. Brown trout feed on insect larvae, crustaceans, molluscs, small fish and frogs.
