Painting - Watercolor And Ink
The name of this painting is Budding Poppies. It is an illustrative style watercolor painting of red poppies and buds prepared to bloom. I drew the art in India ink and then painted in watercolor. I then reapplied India ink in areas that I felt needed to be emphasized. . . . . . . . . . . While poppies are grown for their wonderful colorful flowers, some species are used for food or as a source for opiate drugs. There are about 4 to 6 petals on a poppy flower and they can grow to be over 4 feet tall and 6 inches across. They bloom in late spring to early summer. When I have tried to grow them in my own back yard they do not survive the rabbits – evidently they enjoy them and eat them down as quickly as they bloom. . . . . . While researching poppies I found out that there are a couple of symbolic uses for them. Evidently they have been used as a symbol of sleep, peace, and death. The reason given for sleep was due to the extracted opium. It is used for death because of the color of the red poppy. This is why poppies are often used in remembrance of soldiers who died during wartime.
