Buffalo Bur Flower From Snowy Range Life
Relief - Bronze
This is an individual relief from Snowy Range Life. When Dawn first saw this yellow flower growing in the middle of the two-track leading to her family's log cabin, the artist thought it so rare and intriguing that she quickly ran for her sketchbook. Later, when she found it in a field guide, it surprised her to learn that the buffalo-bur (Solanum rostratum) is considered a common weed. A native annual, it grows to two feet high, also a surprise since the individual Dawn found and drew was only six inches high. Though she had never seen it before, she read that "buffalo-bur is widely distributed in the western US and is common on wastelands and prairies."
The word "wasteland" is often used by tourists who drive across Wyoming's vast stretches of sagebrush steppe. Dawn and most Wyoming citizens object to the term, because it reflects ignorance of the rich variety of native plants and animals who inhabit these wide open spaces.
The buffalo-bur plant is a member of the Potato Family, which also includes eggplant, chili and bell peppers, tomato, petunia, tobacco, and the deadly nightshade.
If you order a print, please keep in mind that the original sculpture is less than 3 x 4 inches in size!
