Description
If you take the old Route 66 heading west through Arizona you will come into the old ghost town of Oatman, Arizona. This old building, with its' "Glory Hole" sign is now an antique or junk shop, with a tree being propped up in front of the boardwalk steps. The building, built in 1904, was formerly Oatman Drug Co., a bus stop, the post office, a bank and a health club. Oatman, and the neighboring town of Gold Roads were the largest producers of gold in Arizona during the early 1900's. When World War II broke out, the mines were closed and the miners taken to other mines for much needed metals. This is when the burros were not needed anymore so were turned loose in the mountains. Several herds reside there to this day and a group of around 10 burros wander into Oatman daily looking for handouts as they roam the streets.
The mines opened again in the 1990's but closed once more due to the low gold prices. Then along came I-40 to California so Oatman and Route 66 were bypassed in the 1950's, making it a real ghost town. When Laughlin, Nevada started building up in the 70's, Oatman began becoming a tourist destination and people came from all around to see the burros, the live wild west shows and to wander through the various shops and restaurants that are now active.
