I have fond memories of Mourning Cloaks. When I was in elementary school (Sherman Oaks) I used to find their catterpillars and raise them to butterflys. They are beautiful and you have horored their beauty here.

Ooooo! There's that gorgeous cobalt blue I love! Great capture, Heidi! Aren't butterflies so beautiful...it's amazing this one stopped flitting about for a few moments so you could capture this shot. It's called a 'Mourning Cloak' butterfly? What a perfect name! f/v

Joy, I couldn't believe it when this butterfly landed perfectly on this senetti plant. I thought that the flower color perfectly enhanced the little blue spots on the wings. Yes, it is a Mourning Cloak. These seem to be one of the least timid typed of butterflies I've encountered. Thank you so much.
