Byzantine Art Ambelos
Painting - Oil On Canvas
The 4th completed painting for the project is called I Ambelmas; it is a painting of Jesus and his 12 apostles. The first icon reproducing the image of Jesus, or of God, was believed to have been painted by Luke, and there seems to have been made a statue of Jesus seen by Eusebius of Caesarea in the late 3th century. The Islamic and Jewish religions see the reproduction of God, or any human figure as blasphemous and painters such as Mark Rothko have been successful in producing highly spiritual art without reference to the human form. This painting is about values, in particular about knowledge, wisdom and justice. Here Ive painted Jesus giving, through his blessing, the power of healing and to perform miracles to his apostles, this to me becomes symbolic that healing comes from the word or knowledge or wisdom, and reinforces the importance of culture. Self healing, or self knowledge, should be a process which brings us, through justice, and therefore law, to creating and maintaining a healthy and balanced society for all of us to live in. This painting could also been seen as depicting the first church, the 12 apostles and the 52 disciples, but I am not interested in the development of the Christian church, its schisms and conflicts, but I am interested in picking out those values which I consider fundamental to our well being today.
