Description
Polarised light micrograph of a transverse section of the skin of a camel (Camelus sp.). Discrete tufts of hair are embedded within the skin. The hair serves to keep animals warm in blizzards in high mountainous regions and to keep animals cool in desert heat. Camels moult in late spring and early summer and the shed hair is collected for use in clothing. The skin is used to produce leather goods. Magnification: x28 at 10cm wide.
