Camille Flammarion (1842-1925), French astronomer and author, at home in his study. In 1882, after working for the Paris Observatory, Flammarion founded L'Astronomie, a monthly popular astronomy magazine. The following year he founded the observatory of Juvisy-sur-Orge and, in 1887, the French Astronomical Society (Societe Astronomique de France). Flammarion wrote many books, the best known of which is L'Astronomie Populaire (1879). Craters on the Moon and Mars are named in his honour. Artwork from the 13th volume (first period of 1894) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
