Description
This tree wasn't used to gather maple syrup, it's a can used to hold paperwork for a mining claim. Miners used to nail cans, bottles, or anything else the could attach to trees to hold their paperwork. The papers, kept from the elements, identified the coordinates of the mine boundaries. In mining country, if you find something like this attached to a tree, an old mine is bound to be nearby.
