Description
Daniel-Hyacinthe-Marie Liénard de Beaujeu (1711-1755) was an officer in the troupes de la Marine - the French regular troops that garrisoned New France. He commanded the French, Canadian and Amerindian forces at the beginning of the battle of the Monongahela on 9 July 1755 where he was killed. Beaujeu knew he was outnumbered and convinced native allies encamped around the fort to join him in a raid against the British before they got to the fort. Although he was killed at the beginning of the battle, his ability to convince the Indian allies to accompany the French was the key to this early French victory.
